Day 2 (09 Aug 2008)
After a night of energized sleep, on the comfy plains of bed under the many many stars resort, we knew that we are all “MORE THAN READY” to scale the second mountain today. We were going to climb Gunung Lambak. It was yet another 500+ m mountain. We heard that this climb was going to be interesting. Why? It was because we were going to get on all fours for the climb.
We did some stretching exercise at the foot of the mountain. The guide told us that we would be taking the toughest route up the mountain and descending with a moderate one.
It’s was long, but fast. In 1 hour plus, we reached the summit. Like Mt Belumut, the summit was a bear area with vegetation by the side. Yet another breathtaking scenery. We had our lunch on the summit and took our group photos again YES… we took a photos with our NPCC flag, haha...
Quickly we descend the mountain. It has come to the end of our toughest time for the trip. We are so, so relief. When we reached the campsite, we discovered that some of the tents were ‘destroyed’ by the wind. My tent was one of them. The magic wand has broken. The students were given a long break to get themselves ready for their group performance for the campfire. During the break, I had headache, I tried to ignore it and went to take some photographs of our campsite. Now is my chance to show off my photography skill…
Night falls, it was campfire time. This time, it was a real campfire.. as I vivdly remembered that in Belumut, we had ‘torchlight’ campfire as we were not allowed to set fire. The students enjoyed themselves through their laughter. We were ask to judge the performance, and we came up with an unanimous result. Seriously, that was the only group that we understood what they were performing. And you know what, ‘SEX’ seems to be the theme for all group. Overall, it is still quite enjoyable.
Soon, it’s time for bed! I’m really tired.
At about 3.30 a.m. something bad happened. A horse tripped and collapsed onto a tent. When we reached the site, the boys were already evacuated from the tent. I took a closer look and realize that the horse was the male horse which was roaming around the campsite with its partner earlier this afternoon. It looked very sick and it could not stand up anymore. I guess it was having a runny nose, as this afternoon, it has mucous flowing out of his nose.. Soon the ranger arrived, and the other horse was taken away. We feel better, as we were afraid the female horse might just go berserk after witnessing the death of his partner. And true, the ranger came with a truck and towed the male horse away on its neck. The horse died on spot. It was dragged away till it disappeared from our sight.
We did some stretching exercise at the foot of the mountain. The guide told us that we would be taking the toughest route up the mountain and descending with a moderate one.
The initial climb was daunting and tiring. We were all drenched with perspiration. Students started to fall back. They were all encouraged to move on… Go E1 Cluster. We finally reached our first checkpoint. It says “huan ying deng shang nan ba shan” literally translated, we should have been on the summit of the mountain. However, our hope was shattered. That is only the starting of that long and steep slope. It was indeed steep, but not as difficult as I have thought. As we are using all fours to climb, our weights are distributed on them. Hence we don’t get tired easily. Coupled with the speed that we progressed (due to safety reasons), we don’t get shagged out easily.

My headache didn’t really go away. Hence I took my medication and move on to the next part of the programme. They had a session of survival skills. They learnt how cook eggs, rice, boil water and even how to set traps… It was really interesting isn’t it? As it was the same as what were taught last year. I wasn’t really listening. The students had great fun, they were even trying out the skills… having hand-on session. Their practical session was all around the teachers’ tents, what if they burn them down.

Malaysia Expedition Day 1
Day 1 (08 Aug 2008)
We reached the Tuas checkpoint and everyone dashes into the automatic gantry. However, some of them were rejected entry and were re-directed to the manual gantry. We didn’t realize that one has to be above 15 of age to use the automatic gantry (if they are not using the biometric passport). This reminded me about the incident last year. Why didn’t I remembered and repeat the same mistake. (WASTE TIME). So I have most of my boys redirected to the manual gantry. Can’t believe it, they are so young… Haha... And now the joke of the day, Pariz told me, “Mr Jason, you know what… when Ghufran was asked to put his thumb on the red laser light for his thumbprint, he pressed his thumb onto the wet spronge (those that you found in post office when you want to wet your stamps.. ). The officer was laughing too…). I almost fainted. That added to my worries for the Malaysia expedition.
Next, we cleared the Malaysia checkpoint, and the stupid security officer stopped me and asked if I was a Singaporean!! Isn’t it obvious… Maybe I look like an illegal immigrant.
In another hour, we have reach our first Mountain, Gunung Panti. Familiar isn’t it. Yes, it’s the mount for NYAA Silver Expedition. We have to walk a long way before we reach the FOOT of the mountain. Along the way, we met a horse, some chicken and cattle (along the “the land of dungs”). The hike was tiring, but challenging. This is when you see the children exhibiting their caring and leadership skills. The MJCian did take good care of their juniors. They were also constantly encouraged with that irritating “2 minutes more, 2 minutes more….” which never seemed to fulfill. We took about TWO hours plus to reach the summit. The difficulty of the trek was still alright, but definitely tougher than our very own Bukit Timah Hill. We took some photographs, of course, with our NPCC flag. =P
We had lunch and we descended the mountain, along the same trail. Everyone had depleted their energy. Getting down was tougher, along the way, Darren sprained his ankle but he was still very determined to complete the course. That’s the spirit, go Darren!!. Fauzi had a relapse of his old ailment. His pain on his knees came back, but he completed the trail as well. Good work. The bus was already waiting for us to bring us to our campsite. Before that could happened; everyone bought an ice bag each, which cost 10 cents. IN RINGGIT!! AND THAT DEFINITELY SAVES OUR LIVES…
Today, we reported to MJC at 0615. The move out time was supposed to be 0630, but we only managed to leave MJC by 0700. The bus driver was really unhappy over this, complaining that he had taken a mid-night taxi and reached the school at 0545. We empathised with his anger. Being a teacher-in-charge, I have to make sure that the boys are well-fed, hence, the night before, I went to buy some bread and milo drinks for them. (Just in case they got hungry, they are GROWING KIDS afterall.)
Someone seemed to be missing. Hey, where’s Aaron!!

The campsite was beautiful. It was like an New Zealand Plains… with a lake (QUITE DIRTY), horses (ONLY TWO, NO.. NOW ONLY ONE , you will know why later) AND TOILETS…… That is really a relief for all of us… as we were told that there are no toilets and we have to powder bathe for the 3D2N expedition. The students quickly embarked in their tent pitching and dinner. Nothing much happen later, everyone was tired, and light off at 10 00.
Today, we were invited to perform in the SPARKLE carnival organize by RC Zone 7. Inevitable, we will be showcasing our PDS performance again. =P I must say that they are rather good to be able to come up with a performance in such short notice. We reached the school at 0815 and prepare for the competition. I was a bit disappointed as not all participants turned up. But at least some tried to come. It was a SUNDAY afterall. The cadets did some last minute preparation. It was indeed last minutes, as I came that some really learn certain steps LAST MINUTE… fainted.
We reached the venue and did our last practice. Before the actual event, we took some photos for the sec 2 cadets (My sec 3 cadets went missing).

The actual performance started, everyone was doing well. But something is still missing… Personally I think is the coordination. That accounted for the number of practices that they have went through. However, it is good considered the short notice.
We had McChicken from the organizers. The cadets also watched some of the performance before we proceeded back to the school.
A reminder to the performers again. Have you all washed the PDS uniform and returned them??!!

Quickly we reach the bottom of the moutain. Went back to campsite. After sometime we got Survival skills training. Everyone have to surround the area to the guides explain.
